We don't have solar :(. The quotes we got for our house were so huge that we would have passed on, literally, before they were paid off. We did get a propane generator for the house which we have not had to use so far, but feel better off having it.
Running a house on solar would be really tough. A tiny home built for off-grid living could probably do it, but not a regular house. So, I totally understand getting the gas generator for your home.
For camping though, solar is a much better option. The RV already has gas onboard and can run the stove, fridge, water heater, furnace, etc so that other things can be powered by 12-volt and solar. This is like gas in a home, so it's quiet and built-in. I don't recommend a gas generator for camping though.
Solar is great for camping! I gave a solar panel and the stuff that goes with it to some friends of ours who camp all the time. Along with a big bag to fill with water and hang in the sun for showers. They loved that!
My husband really wants to try traveling in an RV to drive to Utah to see our son and his family. But I think we might be a little to over the hill for that adventure (in our early 80s!
When I was in Mexico, my neighbour was 92. So you'd be surprised! 😅 She had a big 42-foot bus and she drove it to Mexico herself. Last time I spoke to her, she was headed to Switzerland with her girls and had taken the bus back to the US.
If you do try th RV, I recommend getting something comfortable and not anything that requires pushing up a roof (pop-ups), cooking outside, or converting furniture. I think you would enjoy it. Utah is also a BEAUTIFUL state for traveling. Salt Lakes City drivers are the absolute worst though. 🤣
