FAQ 08: Is Summer a Good Time To Visit Rocky Point in Mexico?

Not gonna lie, it's hot AF down here.

I first visited Rocky Point in October 2021 and fell in love with the area. A one-month visit quickly turned into me staying for half a year. I didn't leave until March 2022 ― and only because of the prospect of building a tiny house in New Mexico, USA.

While working on this tiny house, Mom booked a flight to visit, so she could track progress. When the tiny home project failed, Mom wondered whether she should call off the trip. Instead, we chose to head to Mexico.

How hot is it in Puerto Peñasco during the summer?

We have not had a day under 91 degrees Fahrenheit since we arrived. This is relatively cool by desert standards, but the humidity in this beach town takes things up a notch. For example, the weather reading two days ago said it was 91 degrees but felt like 107!

Usually, in the Desert Southwest, high temperatures last for a few hours during the afternoon. Then, temperatures plummet drastically at night. You can typically expect a 20-to-30-degree difference.

Not so in Rocky Point. We haven't had a single night below 80.

I usually never run the air conditioning in the RV for more than an hour per day, and even that is a rarity. In Rocky Point, we’ve been running the air for about 22 hours each day.

When we arrived in Rocky Point, the power went out on our lot twice in 24 hours due to a problem at our site. That meant no air in the RV while the midday sun bore down on the roof.

We had just returned from shopping, the second time we lost electricity. We could have gone back out while the property manager fixed it, but I travel with my cat. So, mom and I roasted in solidarity with Shadow.

How humid is it in Puerto Peñasco during the summer?

I mentioned that humidity is the real culprit behind the smoldering heat, so how humid is it? Even with the air conditioning unit inside the RV, we experience humidity levels as high as 80%. Since we arrived, I'm not sure I've seen my hygrometer drop below 50%.

The outdoor humidity tells a similar tale. This week's weather forecasts the lowest humidity at 66% and the highest at 74%. Today (August 26th, 2022) was the day at 74%. It was also the hottest at 97 degrees Fahrenheit.

Do we regret coming to Mexico in these high temperatures?

Absolutely not! We've been having a blast enjoying this beach town during its off-season. We have the beaches and restaurants almost all to ourselves. There hasn't been any traffic and finding parking spaces has been easy peasy.
