I took a gap year after two years of working in corporate. At the time, I was living in Jamaica and making just US $3.50 per hour. So, when people tell me I'm lucky for the life I have, it irks my soul.
Luck didn't get me here.
Commitment and creativity did.
So, how did I afford a gap year, and how have other people from humble backgrounds done the same?
Delay the Gap Year
Let's be honest. Most of us would love to take a year off when we're young enough to make mistakes and bounce back. The opportunity to earn that clear vision at the start of our lives is priceless.
But, unless you have parents ready and willing to fund your plans, you will likely need to work and save some money for yourself. I was 25 years old when I quit corporate to travel and write.
