Desert Summers: Stay Cool and Avoid Big Electric Bills

We’ve officially reached 100 degrees at camp. All day long, I can hear large air conditioning units kicking on and off. On the first day of triple-degree weather, my neighbor dropped by to buy a copy of my novel and looked at me incredulously.
“Your air isn’t on!” he noticed.
“Nope,” I confirmed.
“You’re crazy! It’s 100 degrees right now!”
“Is it?” I asked. I hadn’t realized we finally crept up to the big 1-0-0. I knew we were getting there but hadn’t noticed it was that hot at all.
Last week, I promised to share not just how to stay cool—but also how to keep your electric bill low while doing it. So, here goes!
1. Choose Your Priority
Can you stay as cool as you want without paying an enormous summer bill in the desert? Yes, but not always. That’s why it’s important that you decide which of these two is more important to you:
Cool temperatures
Low cost
If you have a pet and work away from home, the answer should be cool temperatures. Your pet can die if that RV gets too hot while you’re out. I work at home with my pet and have the best of both worlds for our needs.
What you ultimately decide will depend on your needs, preferences, and heat tolerance.
